Job Title: Digital Health Operations Lead (Part-Time)
Organization: Abortion Support
Location: Johannesburg/Cape Town (remote)
Hours: 24 hours per week
Start Date: As soon as possible
Role Purpose:
To coordinate and ensure the quality of Abortion Support’s digital SRHR (Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights) service offering. To coordinate the helpdesk team providing digital aid to individuals seeking abortion help. To oversee helpdesk operations, drive service improvement initiatives, foster a culture of service quality, and maintain a supportive organizational culture aligned with feminist values.
Role Context:
Abortion Support is a start-up NGO providing digital SRHR services in South Africa. Our mission is to increase access to safe and compassionate abortion and contraceptive care through digital health services designed to reach underserved populations. Candidates must be supportive of a person’s right to self-manage their reproductive health including abortion.
Key Responsibilities:
Helpdesk Coordination and Service Provision:
- Provide confidential and empathetic digital support to women and pregnant people seeking abortion and contraceptive care (+- 4 hours/week)
- Control processing and progress of digital help requests and oversee service provision
- Supervise helpdesk members and ensure that helpdesk members complete tasks according to schedule and protocols
- Solve logistical problems together with pharmacies, couriers, helpdesk and service users
- Supervise the training of new helpdesk members
- Maintain current knowledge of medical abortion, our services, and the abortion context in South Africa through initial and ongoing training and independent research
- Build an inclusive and transparent organizational culture and structure that promotes self-directed work and a culture of service quality
Service Quality Improvement and Content Development:
- Identify and report operational and service quality issues to the Executive Director
- Develop and maintain service provision documentation (e.g training manuals, protocols and checklists)
- Develop and maintain service-user instructional materials (e.g service provision texts, instructional videos, infographics, website and social media)
- Develop a Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) framework to assess service reach, accessibility, clinical outcomes, and user experience and identify areas for improvement.
- Implement findings from M&E activities to enhance overall service quality and effectiveness.
- Conduct user research to enhance user experience, accessibility, and service delivery effectiveness.
Qualifications and Expertise:
- Degree in social science-related subject, nursing, pharmacy, medicine or equivalent standard of education. Clinical background desirable
- Post-graduate degree, Masters in Public Health, or health-related qualification or equivalent standard of education desirable
- Understanding of sexual and reproductive health, gender, and the associated technical and political issues related to abortion
- Experience in at least one of the following: health service provision and design, monitoring and evaluation, digital health programming
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to write a variety of documents to a range of audiences
- Sound research skills
- High level of computer literacy with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new digital tools and technologies as needed
