Part-time Helpdesk Position

(Remote 6-9 hours/week)

Abortion Support South Africa is a progressive, pro-choice, human rights-based non-profit committed to advancing and upholding reproductive health and rights in South Africa. We are a team of activists, researchers and healthcare providers working to increase access to abortion in South Africa. Abortion Support provides information and online referrals for women needing abortion pills.

We provide direct assistance, including digital support for self-managed abortion, and information to the people who need it most; partner with groups and organizations on a range of campaigns, conduct abortion-related research; and work with decision-makers to advance progressive policies on access to abortion.

We are looking for a part-time helpdesk member to join our team and help women in South Africa access safe abortion services.

Role Description:
  • Providing confidential and compassionate support to women and pregnant people seeking abortion help through our online consultation and communication platform.
  • Responding to email and chat abortion information requests, handling requests for access to safe abortion and referring requests to partner doctors.
  • Contacting pharmacies across the country to determine abortion pill accessibility and build partnerships.
  • Maintaining your knowledge on medical abortion, the service and abortion in the South African context. Helpdesk members are trained prior to start and offered additional training periodically.
  • Attending weekly helpdesk meetings.

Location: This is a remote role. Location in South Africa is required.
Time Commitment: 6 – 9 hours/week (2 – 3 hours per day x 3 days)
Reimbursement: ZAR 120/hr gross
Start date: 15 April 2025

Role Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills.
  • A personal computer and smartphone, in good working order.
  • Access to high speed reliable private WIFI.
  • Computer literacy including experience with email, Zoom, Google Drive, Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
  • A team player who is also able to work independently within established protocols.
  • Attention to detail (necessary when assisting doctors and following protocols).
  • Problem solving skills and flexibility to adapt to changes.
  • Integrity and reliability for the handling of confidential client information.
  • Service oriented, tact, good listener, desire to support people in a feminist way.
  • Prior knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and/or healthcare is desirable.
  • An intersectional (pro) feminist interested in supporting sexual reproductive health care rights and justice, including self-managed abortion.
